Cleaning Wood Furniture
Climate Control
The wood in furniture continues to exchange moisture with the air as it responds to climatic changes in your home. Like your skin, wood is porous. It responds to extremely dry air by losing moisture and shrinking a bit. These natural changes, however, do not affect the furniture's quality or sturdiness.
An ideal environment for wood furniture is a temperature between 65 and 75 degrees with a relative humidity between 35 and 40 percent. Avoid placing wood furniture near heat or air-conditioning outlets. Exposure to these elements as well as humidifiers, fireplaces and space heaters can damage wood pieces.
Dusting
Dust often to remove everyday particles from wood surfaces. Use a clean, damp, lint-free cloth such as an old t-shirt. Do not use a sponge or dishcloth. Be sure to remove any excess moisture from table.
Polishing
In addition to regular dusting, occasional polishing to remove smudges and particles will enhance the appearance of the piece. Be sure to choose a polish for your type of finish. Be sure to avoid polish that contains silicone.
The recommended polishing procedure is as follows:
1. Dispense polish onto a clean, white, lint-free cloth. Use sparingly, a little goes a long way.
2. Wipe polish following the direction of the grain. Wipe off excess with the other side of the cloth or a second cloth if needed.
3. Avoid excessive rubbing.
Cleaning
We always recommend following manufacturer recommendations. However, if unavailable you may use a cleaner such as Murphy's Oil Soap. Follow instructions on the bottle.
Waxing
Not recommended. Today's finishes do not benefit from waxing. It will cause a wax buildup that can gray the wood finish.
Tables: Glass and Stone Rim
Cleaning and Care
For glass tabletops it is recommended to use any type of glass cleaner and soft, clean cloth. Do not use anything abrasive on glass. Abrasives will cause scratches on the glass.
On Stone Rim and Wrought Iron bases it is recommended to use only a soft dust mop.
Parents and Grandparents of small children may want to consider tables with rounded edges and no glass tops.
Lamp Care
1. If cared for properly, lamps will give you years of trouble-free use.
2. Dust the lamp and shade as needed with a dry soft cloth or feather duster. Never use water or alcohol.
3. Never pick up lamp by the cord, shade or finial. Grab the lamp at the base and neck when lifting. Please do not drop!!
4. Never stick any objects, especially your finger, down into the socket. Bulbs only!!
5. Do not try to touch or replace bulb if lamp has been on for any period of time.
6. Do not use a higher wattage bulb in lamp than is recommended.
